That means your fuel-only cost is 100 Ft/km.

True cost per km

Let’s compare two drivers with the same car. Both spend the same amount on yearly ownership costs, but they drive different distances.
Shared assumptions
- Fuel cost: 650 Ft/liter
- Fuel consumption: 6.5 l/100 km
- Annual maintenance, insurance, tires, and depreciation combined: 1,200,000 Ft/year
First, calculate fuel-only cost:
650 ÷ 6.5 × 100 = 100 Ft/km
Now add ownership costs based on mileage.
Driver A: low annual mileage
Annual distance: 8,000 km
Ownership cost per km: 1,200,000 ÷ 8,000 = 150 Ft/km
Total true cost per km: 100 + 150 = 250 Ft/km
In this case, the fuel-only figure looks manageable, but the real cost is much higher because the fixed annual costs are spread over fewer kilometers.
Driver B: high annual mileage
Annual distance: 30,000 km
Ownership cost per km: 1,200,000 ÷ 30,000 = 40 Ft/km
Total true cost per km: 100 + 40 = 140 Ft/km
Here, the same car becomes much cheaper on a per-kilometer basis because the fixed costs are diluted across more driving.

Why annual mileage matters
